The city of Alicante offers diverse and rich cultural activities at all times of the year.
Its museums satisfy the most different interests, offering numerous alternatives, among which are:
–Museo Arqueológico Provincial (MARQ – Provincial Archaeological Museum): one of the most avant-garde museums in Spain, due to its innovative way of approaching archaeology, by using audiovisual techniques, which made it get the European Museum Award in 2004.
–Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MACA – Museum of Contemporary Art): an important art collection from the twentieth century, formed by works of Eusebio Sempere, Chillida, Picasso, Dalí and Miró.
–Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina (MUBAG – Gravina Museum of Fine Arts): hosting a collection of Alicantine painters from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.
Alicante’s important monumental heritage offers examples of places of interest which can be visited in the city, such as: the Basilica of Santa María, the San Nicolás Concathedral, the Ayuntamiento (city hall), the Monasterio de la Santa Faz (Monastery of the Holy Face), the Santa Bárbara castle (medieval fortress of Arab origin, located in the summit of mount Benacantil, from where the bay of Alicante can be seen).
The Main Theater, the Las Cigarreras cultural center and the ADDA Auditorium host cultural activities throughout the year (music, theater).
Fires of St. John: Major holidays of the city, declared of International Tourist Interest, which have their origin in the celebration of the summer solstice.
From June 20 through 24, more than two hundred papier mache monuments (bonfires) of satirical themes are set up in the city, to be burned on the night of June 24, in the spectacular “Cremà”(burning).
During the celebrations, other acts are included, like the “Mascletàs” (amazing firecracker contests),the “Pregón”, the “Plantà”, the Procession of Ninot, parades and street music; among them stands out the Flower Offering to the Virgen del Remedio. From June 25 through 29, the fireworks contest takes place, with fireworks shot from the beach.
